Make your life better with this Habit Tracker based on Notion

If you are a person whose habits are more like activities you do during the week instead of on fixed days (go to the gym three times a week, eat fruit 6 days a week, etc.) and you have a healthy love for databases over checkboxes on pages then this is the habit tracker in notion for you.

I have used this habit tracker in Notion for over nine months, and it does exactly what it should: keep me accountable for the habits that are important to me without stressing me out.

Scalable Habit Tracker

Logging and creating habits should be easy. Logging a habit is as easy as clicking on the habit tile. It will open in a switch peek window, and you press the button “add habit”, and the habit is added.

Get it now

You can set weekly goals for each habit and assign your habits to more significant areas where you want to grow. Each week, you have a clear view of what to do and what works.

This habit tracker requires Notion. If you don’t have Notion, you can get it here (I get some money if you decide to purchase something). Furthermore, some paid features might improve this habit tracker (but are not required).

How it works

This is just extra information

Logging and creating habits should be easy. Logging a habit is as easy as clicking on the habit tile. It will open in a switch peek window, and you press the button “add habit”, and the habit is added.

Adding a habit

Adding a habit is as easy as creating a new entry and adding a “weekly goal value, ” which is the minimum amount of times you want to do this habit. That is all you need to do. If you wish to use areas to keep track of areas in your life to focus on, you can assign one to the habit. You can do more, though that is mentioned in the “advanced” section on this page.

The Databases

This Notion template consists of three databases. Since documentation is better than guessing, all is straightforward. Here is a simple explanation of how it all works.

Areas

Areas are more significant topics you want to work on, each containing one or more habits. Limit the areas since too many will result in a lack of focus. However, if you have more than 4 or 5, a category is available that gives you an extra filtering option for different views.

A progress bar shows how far you got during the week. It maxes out at 90% of your total goal for that week to keep you motivated. Not every day has to be perfect every day. 90% effort 90% of the time is a great consistency.

Habit Overview

View of all active habits

The habit overview is what it says it is: it shows your habits in different shapes and sizes. Each view has its specific uses:

  • Raw Table View
This view shows all the current and old habits in a table view.
  • 2023 stats
This view shows the high-level statistics per quarter of the habits for 2023.
  • 2024 stats
This view shows the high-level statistics per quarter of the habits for 2024 (if you need 2025, look in the “advanced” section of this page).
  • All Habits
This view shows all active habits.
  • To Do Today
This view shows all active habits and you have not done yet today.
  • Done Today
This view shows all the habits you have done today

Habit Transactions

Don’t go here unless you have to go. This database stores every habit you have logged and allows you to have your insights calculated out of this database.

Advanced

If you are an expert, go also here!

The essence of this habit tracker is simple. However, you can do some additional things that will make it 10 times more powerful.

Buttons everywhere

You can copy and paste any buttons to track your habits elsewhere in your Notion setup.

For example, I have a habit of cleaning up my task inbox, and of course, I got it next to it. Make sure to update the habit in the button, though, since by default, the action is set as “this page.”

Stacks

Habit stacks are collections of habits that stack after each other. You build upon an existing habit, making the new habit more straightforward to start (and accomplish).

When creating a new stack, you create a new habit and add the habits you want to stack to “stack items”. To complete it and make it easier, you want to copy and paste the relevant button in the main stack so you can complete the habit in the stack instead of having to do an extra click.

A habit stack disappears in the “To Do Today” view when all habits in the stack are done that day.

Category views

Maintaining habits should be easy (it is the number one rule of habits). Therefore, consider implementing habit views across your Notion and make the Notion view part of a synched block.

Modifications

By default, I made it so that The calculations of your habits are based quarterly. I made it for 2023 and 2024. You can adjust this by editing the formulas and adding new properties.

Adding 2025 to your overview is as easy as duplicating the 2024 properties and updating the formula with 2025. If you want to do more advanced changes, knock yourself out. If you are unfamiliar with formulas, the reference from Thomas Frank is a great help.
